Rihanna receives the honourable Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award tonight at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards where she will take us through her greatest hits released during her 11-year career span. From Pon de Replay to Needed Me, the Bajan songstress has certainly grown from the young, innocent island gal to the risk-taking fashionista who seems to possess an unbothered persona – an attribute applauded by many young fans. However, when the announcement came that Miss Fenty is the 2016 recipient of the iconic award which has been given to the likes of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna and David Bowie, many critics questioned whether Rihanna’s name is worthy of being amongst the greats who have left an unparalleled legacy.
I, myself have always been a fan of Rihanna so I’m not going to debate whether MTV was right to give her this award but to commemorate her huge achievement I’m going to name my top 5 favourite music videos from Rihanna – yes, only 5 from her huge visual directory. That shouldn’t be hard right?
1. PON DE REPLAY
17-year-old Rihanna making her musical debut. Who thought she would become the force to be reckoned with a whole decade later?
The career-changing song which took Rihanna’s career to a whole new level – could be considered her first official pop single. It also spent 10 weeks at number one in the UK until people believed the song was cursed.
3. WE FOUND LOVE
Her sixth number one single in the UK!
4. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
One of Rihanna’s many underrated songs and the choreography is LIFE!
5. ONLY GIRL IN THE WORLD
After spending more-or-less the whole day watching Rihanna videos, I really cannot think of any other singer who has developed and evolved the way she has but still managed to stay current but if you know anybody feel free to share in the comments – I’m happy to discuss 🙂
